As a national organisation, BIS is in charge of many certifications that uphold the product quality standards in the Indian market. Businesses that achieve quality criteria under the Product Certification Scheme are awarded BIS certification by the Bureau of Indian criteria. Additionally, the process carried out by the Bureau of India Standards aids companies in creating a reputation for their goods within the sector. The BIS has established itself as the second-hand authority on authenticity and quality over the years. Producers may apply their standard marking to their BIS-certified items following certification.
The process of certifying a product as meeting a specific Indian standard and being suitable for usage in the Indian market is known as BIS certification.
The National Standards organisation Indian Standards Institute (ISI) was renamed the Bureau of Indian Standards in 1987. The official mark awarded to manufacturers for a variety of goods by the Bureau of Indian Standards is the ISI Mark. Since 1955, the ISI Mark has been regarded as a representation of excellence, security, and reliability. Industrial products have been marked with the ISI mark to indicate conformance. It guarantees that the product conforms with the Indian standards (IS), which are created by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the country's primary standard organisation.
Acquiring the ISI mark for any product that meets Indian Standards is known as ISI Mark Registration. Electric irons, room heaters, air conditioners, electric stoves, freezers, and electric cables are among the many electrical items that must have ISI markings.
Scheme II of Schedule II of the BIS Regulation Act of 2016 includes the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) as a component of conformity assessment. This programme was established in 2012. The CRS scheme is a self-declaration scheme, and it does not require a recurring factory audit in order to be certified.
Under BIS Scheme-II, BIS-CRS is an obligatory certification requirement. A total of 77 goods have received notifications from 4 separate Ministries, including MEITY, MCF, and MNRE.
Under Scheme-I of Schedule-II, BIS Act, 2016 and (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018, the Bureau of Indian Standards has been running the international Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS) for international manufacturers since 2000. With the help of this programme, foreign applicants and manufacturers can sell their goods in India by using the standard mark, also known as the ISI Mark. The only body qualified to give BIS Certificates for import to foreign producers is the Foreign producers Certification Department (FMCD). BIS's primary goal in awarding manufacturing certificates to foreign manufacturers is to ensure that the general public receives high-quality, risk-free, dependable products.
The FMCD department's BIS FMCS Certificate in India is intended for manufacturing facilities abroad.
